Danish Furniture Care - be nice to good furniture

All good things which are made to last require maintenance. This also applies to furniture.

Even if a piece of furniture has been made to fulfil the consumer’s expectations, it can, like good clothes, very quickly get a ”used” look. Good things need looking after if they are to keep their quality.

This is especially true of good furniture, and the articles on this website advises on how to maintain furniture and consequently extend its life.

Modern furniture production includes a wide variety of materials. It is therefore not possible to include all of them in a leaflet of limited size. This leaflet includes the most common materials and surfaces.

Eight general rules for furniture care

  1. Always try the mildest cleaning agent first.
  2. Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
  3. Chewing gum and candle wax are most easily removed after careful freezing with carbon dioxide (freezing spray) or with benzine.
  4. Never use cleaning agents containing abrasives, e.g. scouring powder and metal polishes.
  5. Remember to tighten knock-down fittings when required.
  6. Soap solution is made from 1 part soap flakes to 40 parts water. See also the relevant notes on specific surfaces.
  7. Solution of washing up liquid is made as specified by the manufacturer, however, max. 1 tsp. per 1 liter of water.
  8. Caution! Beware of the risk of fire when using white spirit, methylated spirits and benzine.
